The class focuses on developing a long pose figure drawing or painting from life.
Students begin by executing an accurate linear drawing (block-in) by concentrating on proportions and structure by means of comparative measuring, shape findings, and establishing shadows.
The class focuses on developing a long pose based figure drawing or painting from life. Students begin by executing an accurate linear drawing (block-in) by concentrating on proportions and structure by means of comparative measuring, shape findings, and establishing shadows.
Once the block-in is completed, the student proceeds to render the form, section by section, by observing and understanding the dynamic of light as it falls on the model. As the students gain proficiency in drawing, they will proceed on to grisaille painting where the complexities of color are removed to concentrate on painting in neutral grays. Lastly, the student moves on to painting the figure in color by implementing the same concepts learned in drawing and grisaille while employing an understanding of hue, value, and chroma as it relates to the direction of the source light to the model. Topics such as types of underpaintings, paint handling, mediums, glazing, and stumbling are explored as the student advances.
Carlos Lopez studied at the Grand Central Academy of Art, where he undertook rigorous training in traditional drawing and painting for the next five years. In 2015, he was awarded one of the top prizes from the highly reputable Portrait Society of America. After fourteen years residing in New York City, he moved back to Miami to establish his studio, First Line Atelier, where drawing and painting instruction is offered.
