MIFA's drawing and painting classes.
Our step-by-step systematic progression ensures skill acquisition and task completion, with the curriculum tailored for individual progress. The atelier system, a unique advantage, allows beginners and intermediates to share studio space with advanced students and working artists, gaining insights, critiques, and inspiration.
Our curriculum unfolds over six terms, featuring three major programs: Intensive Drawing, Intermediate, and Advanced Painting. Graduates can further specialize in advanced portraiture, still life, or figure painting, creating a comprehensive and personalized artistic education.
Explore the fundamentals of drawing with MIFA's Intensive Drawing Program, meticulously designed to enhance your artistic skills. Delve into Geometric Shapes Drawing, mastering principles of drawing, value scale, and tone relationships. Progress to Copying Drawing Plates, strengthening your ability to reproduce two-dimensional forms and preparing for three-dimensional subjects.
Engage in Figure Drawing Master Copies, replicating the techniques of 19th Century artists to refine your drawing skills. Transition to Charcoal Cast Drawing, where you'll draw plaster casts, applying the sight-size method and creating depth and atmosphere.
The culmination is Figure Drawing, three-hour sessions with a nude model, refining anatomical accuracy and artistic beauty.
By completing this program, you'll master life drawing, commanding shapes, value relationships, form, and proportion with confidence.
MIFA's Intermediate Program, a bridge from drawing to painting. Strengthen your grasp of color mixing, temperature, depth, edges, and atmosphere in theory and practice. Weekly anatomy and perspective classes add depth to your understanding.
• Advanced Figure Drawing: Apply Cast Drawing techniques to the human figure in extended poses, refining your skills in long-pose figure drawing.
• Geometric Shapes Grisaille Painting: Introduce yourself to oil painting principles using only white, black, and umber, laying the foundation for your painting expertise.
• Limited Palette Cast Painting: Immerse yourself in oil painting as you paint plaster casts with a limited palette, gaining mastery in values, temperatures, and atmospheric effects.
• Limited Palette Still Life Painting: Explore the world of painting with objects and fruits, progressing from single items to compositions, building skills crucial for figure painting.
• Limited Palette Figure Painting: Apply acquired knowledge to a long pose project, mastering value relationships, temperatures, and background-figure dynamics using a limited palette.
• Full Palette Figure Painting: Dive into the rich world of color and temperature with a full palette. Master the intricate relationships between skin tones and the surrounding environment, pushing your skills to new heights.
• Still Life Painting: Develop your ability to recreate diverse surface qualities, deepen your understanding of form, and enhance your grasp of atmosphere, color, and composition. Begin with a five-object composition using a full palette, progressing to a light background composition for an added challenge.
• Portrait Painting: Delve into the art of portraiture, capturing head-and-shoulders compositions that reveal the unique attributes of your subject. Explore the intricacies of head planes, anatomy, facial features, and skin tones through frontal and ¾ views. Elevate your artistic expertise with MIFA's Advanced Painting Program!
