Every master painter started with the same first step: learning to see. In this program, you'll follow the same path used in the great ateliers of Europe.
You'll begin with linear drawing (block-in) — training your eye to measure proportion and structure with precision. From there, you'll move into form rendering, learning how light defines volume. Next comes grisaille painting, where you strip away color to master value and shadow. Finally, you'll bring it all together in full-color portrait painting — combining hue, value, and chroma to create a living, breathing likeness.
Advanced students go further still, exploring underpainting, glazing, mediums, and scumbling — the techniques that separate a good painting from a masterful one. From Your First Line to a Finished Portrait
