This class teaches students to create a detailed and realistic portrait and figures through precise linear drawing, grisaille painting, and finally, applying color. Students progress from the initial block-in to rendering the form in neutral grays before incorporating color
Process Explained
In MIFA's program, students start with linear drawing (block-in), focusing on proportion and structure using comparative measuring techniques and identifying shadows. Once proficient, they advance to rendering forms by analyzing how light interacts with the subject. From there, students move on to grisaille painting, eliminating color complexity to focus on neutral grays and shading. Finally, they master portrait painting in color, incorporating hue, value, and chroma to create lifelike images. Advanced topics include underpainting techniques, glazing, mediums, and scumbling, giving students a well-rounded foundation in classical painting.
