The Mixed Media program provides a dynamic mixture of mediums, craft and aesthetic viewpoints that expose students to a variety of concepts about modern and contemporary art. In a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world, contemporary artists give voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identities, values, and beliefs.
In this context, art students are encouraged to develop their own voice and approaches to art, as well as a unique visual language. We combine studio practice with art historical, visual studies and discussions by a series of theory-practice classes that cover different forms of expression from Impressionism art to the present.
Technical approach:
This class investigates a variety of art making technical applications that challenge form and content, taking the traditional and new materials combined as a base. Students as individuals will adopt these ideas and methods for their own work, continuing the development of formal and technical skills in relation to a personal evolution. History on contemporary materials precedents will be introduced as part of the full program.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1) To explore what “mixed media” means through a wide range of materials as tools of new form of expression.
2) To contextualize current mixed media practices within a historical context through the study of different artists, discussing their vision.
3) Studio assignments will be given to develop an understanding of visual vocabularies, and to build an awareness of how the individual’s transformation of materials can make us more profoundly aware of the world around us.
4) To build visual vocabulary as well as the ability to articulate processes in composition and design. Learn to formulate and develop a body of work with a cohesive visual language.
5) To keep an ongoing collection of references, drawings, clippings and notes that specifically explore the relationship between the search for source material and one’s own transformation of that material through studio practice.
6) To present a cohesive body of work at the course conclusion.

This program is perfect for those students who want to start serious drawing and painting training but cannot make a long-term commitment. One day a week!
“Stop thinking about art works as objects and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences. What makes a work of art good for you is not something that s already inside it but something that happens inside you.”

Portfolio Prep program seeks to engage students in meaningful fusion between the academic and creative work that will propel their artistic creativity and excite them to follow their artistic path and about life itself. The mission of our program is to provide a strong base in traditional and contemporary techniques adequate to our times, with special emphasis placed on the individual development of their own voice in the visual art scene.
Our Art Portfolio Prep classes are for students grades 5 and up, preparing them to showcase their creative talent in a way that’s conducive to impressing admissions officers at Miami-Dade County Public Schools Art Magnet program, winning awards, securing scholarships, and top-ranked art colleges, and even, University level.
In a group class students learn together in a professional but relaxed atmosphere. We concentrate on observational drawing skills using a variety of 2-D media and 3-D, specific subject matter such as still-life set-ups, objects, natural forms, portraits and selfportrait, landscape and abstract thinking. Students learn different techniques for representational drawing and painting by focusing on and capturing what they see using contour line, basic perspective, value, shading and contrast to create a sense of form with understanding of space and volume, also color, texture and design for more complex and expressive artwork.
Composition is emphasized as students make purposeful decisions about how to organize space within a 2-dimensional picture plane. Working from observation, imagination, memory, students become comfortable thinking outside the box when it comes to their own creative possibilities with the goal of producing portfolio-quality work that reflects an individual style as well as understanding of foundational skills.
Our Portfolio Prep program guided by Artist/Instructor Sonia Hidalgo, who has more than 15 years experience preparing kids, with a 99% acceptance rate at art magnet schools helps the student to achieve a strong, original and creative portfolio that will propel their artistic development to the next level.

Sonia began attending private drawing and painting classes at a very early age of 10. Later on She completed five years B.F.A in Fine Arts, minor in Education at Cecilio Acosta Catholic University in Venezuela.
Sonia's artistic process has evolved into something that is as much a spiritual endeavor. Besides her use of traditional drawing and painting techniques, she uses the creative process of mixed media as a form of journalizing her emotional and visceral experiences, the communion of past formal training and a vision to a more contemporary approach of her work allows her to express a rich and more complex and strong body of work.
