Edition I: SYSTEMS OF VISIBILITY
Who gets to be seen?
June 10–July 22, 2027
Hosted by Miami International Fine Arts (MIFA)
ABOUT SEEN
SEEN is an independent, nomadic international platform for contemporary moving image, digital art and time-based media. Every three years, artists from around the world are invited to examine the systems through which bodies, identities and realities become visible, recognized, recorded, circulated—or erased.
Each edition develops a new curatorial thesis and may inhabit a different architectural, geographic and cultural context. The inaugural edition will take place at Miami International Fine Arts (MIFA).
2027 CURATORIAL THEME — SYSTEMS OF VISIBILITY
We do not simply see images. We see through systems.
Contemporary identity is increasingly produced, classified, circulated and contested through systems of visibility. Cameras identify bodies. Databases organize them. Algorithms decide which images surface and which disappear. Interfaces invite us to perform versions of ourselves. Borders convert faces and documents into permission or exclusion. Social networks transform private identity into public representation. Artificial intelligence generates bodies that never existed while surveillance technologies record bodies that cannot opt out of being seen.
Systems of Visibility examines moving image and digital art as both participants in and instruments for questioning these structures.
The Triennial asks: Who is allowed to appear? Who remains invisible? Who controls the image? What happens when a body is translated into data? How do race, gender, sexuality, migration, geography, language, class and technology influence legibility? Can invisibility become resistance? And what happens when machines increasingly participate in the act of seeing?
Technology should not be presented as spectacle. The focus is artistic, conceptual and critical.

SELECTION
Applications will first undergo preliminary review by SEEN’s Curators in Residence. Finalists will then be reviewed by an international selection committee combining curatorial, artistic and institutional perspectives.
Selection will prioritize artistic rigor, conceptual relevance and meaningful engagement with the 2027 curatorial thesis rather than technological novelty.
Selected artists will be presented as part of one professionally curated international exhibition, with works installed throughout MIFA’s galleries and screening/public-program spaces. The exhibition will include permanent moving-image and digital installations as well as screening and live-program components.
PUBLIC PROGRAM
SEEN 2027 will also include artist talks, screenings, conversations, workshops and the Digital Lab, a parallel program focused on contemporary image culture, emerging technologies and time-based media.
